Leadership of the National Nurse-Midwife Trainees Association has registered its displeasure on an increment of school fees and has further called on its members in the various training institutions to refrain from making payments for the time being.
A statement issued on
17th of July, 2015 states:
The National Executive Board and the entire leadership of trainee’s nurses and midwives upon analysing the upheavals placed on trainees in the course of our training wish to air out our displeasure to the media and the public on the malignant increase in our semester-based school fees amidst the numerous challenges facing trainees.
After several follow ups and enquiries on the Ministry of Health approved standard fee for the academic semester proven futile, GNMTA wish to inform it members to adhere strictly to the following DIRECTIVES until further notice:
No student should pay the fees released by their training institutions until further notice.
We request that all local GNMTA representatives from member institutions submit copies of their bills to the national email address (gnmtanew@gmail.com) not later than Tuesday 21-07-2015 for quick response.
We therefore wish to inform all parties involved in the subject matter of this release to come together to arrive on unanimous and well appeasing decision on this HYPER INFLATED SCHOOL FEES for the best of all.

The National Health Students' Association of Ghana has issued a statement, in line with this year's World Health day as follows:
How safe is your food?
We deem it a great privilege to portion with you some thoughts on the theme of the World Health Day 2015, 'Food Safety' and the way forward for Ghana.
The World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on 7th April to alert and educate humanity on various topical issues of health concern.
This years’s focused on food safety; which the National Health Students Association of Ghana (NAHSAG), the national representative body of all health students and fresh health graduates from the various Health Training Institutions and Universities in Ghana believes is fitting due to the increasing annual death toll from the ingestion of unsafe foods.
According to the World Health Organization, food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances causes over 200 diseases, ranging from diarrhoea to cancers. As the adage goes, 'Prevention is better than cure' hence it is only prudent that a collective effort is geared towards the prevention of diseases associated with unsafe food.
First and foremost, we believe it is primarily incumbent on the consumer to ensure that food to be consumed is clean, well cooked, and of acceptable quality. Expiry dates on food items must be checked before purchasing or consuming. Personal hygiene including washing of hands before handling foods or eating must be strictly observed to ensure that food ingested is free from any forms of contaminants. Utensils and food surfaces must be kept clean and raw foods should be kept separate from ready-to-eat foods.
The general public is also encouraged to discard food items when its safety is doubtful.
We further encourage the government
to use all means possible to ensure that foods imported and sold on the local markets are of high quality and pose no threat to health.
The Ghana Standards Board, the Food and Drug Authority and the Ministry of Health should tighten their belts to ensure that Ghanaians are well protected from unsafe foods.
We want to touch on a much pressing area, which is the issue of Genetically Modified Foods.
The Accra Fast Track Court on the 3rd of March, 2015 ordered the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to halt the production and sale of Genetically Modified products in the country and we wish to seize this opportunity to call upon the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to be prompt in this regard and halt the sales or Cultivation of these Genetically Modified foods until the gen on these foods and human health as well as the environmental impact has been fully attained.
It could also be reminisced that the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 1999 issued a statement banning the importation of total fat content of poultry and poultry products above 15%. Despite this proclamation, the sale of turkey tail popularly called “chofi,” among others fatty poultry products are still flourishing across the length and breadth of Ghana regardless of the potential health problems it could cause.
We once again call upon the government and all stakeholders to prosecute any individual(s) who flouts the law.
Finally we call upon all Health students/Interns/graduates/professionals to augment the effort of Government by helping in the education of the public on food safety among other health issues. This will help promote Good health which we believe is the key to a sustainable development.
L et us together ensure that, food is made safe “from farm to plate.”

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has received with great shock and bemusement, news of the CANCELATION of some of the papers in respect of the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and as such, wishes to register its unwavering misgivings on the matter with a strong CALL for a proper investigation with the view to unraveling all the facts of the case and punish all the culprits involved.
It would be recalled that, in a press statement dated, June 17, 2015 issued by the West African Examination Council, the Body made it clear that it had "discovered to its greatest dismay and disappointment that some of the papers of the ongoing BECE have been compromised" and accordingly have decided to CANCEL them. The papers, according to WAEC include English Language 2, Religious and Moral Education 2, Integrated Science 2, Mathematics 2 and Social Studies 2.
"The compromised papers will be re-administered on 29th and 30th June, 2015", the statement added and also hinted of an investigation to unearth the full facts of the malpractice and punish offenders in its quest to demonstrate its strong abhorrence for examination malpractice and protect the sanctity of its certificates.
The Union vehemently condemns in no uncertain terms this infamous practice which is certainly a drawback on the various strides the nation's education sector has chalked over the years in terms of the quality of its products. The sub-regional examination body, WAEC is simply failing the nation and ought to be challenged to rise up to its core mandate. It is no more newsworthy to hear of leakages of examination papers nowadays superintendent by the body.
NUGS believes that this recent scandal should be a wake-up call for a complete overhauling of WAEC as the first step of ensuring a permanent solution to this deleterious canker. The institutional indiscipline and impunity ought to stop now so that authorities can take ultimate responsibility for their actions and inactions. Enough is enough! If we must act, then it has to be now or never. For how long would innocent students or candidates continue to unduly suffer from the negligence of officialdom? A travesty of justice that is.
WAEC tells us of internal investigations anytime such issues happen; yet we are never made to know the outcomes of such investigations. How can WAEC investigate its own? No wonder it doesn't end up anywhere.
It is in the light of this that NUGS welcomes the decision by the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) to takeover this very investigation to unravel this monstrous mystery. The Union wishes to challenge the BNI to do a perfect job in the interest of justice and accordingly implore all and sundry to cooperate with the BNI investigation so that this matter can be dealt with once and for all.
In conclusion, we wish to use this medium to assure our constituents especially those affected by this that, the Union is with them in these challenging times and shall stop at nothing to ensure justice in the matter and also work towards preventing possible future occurrence.

This year saw the induction of 199 newly qualified medical doctors from various Medical Schools in Ghana and abroad, into service by the Ghana Medical and Dental Council.
This took place on 9th May, 2015 at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra.
It is in this regard the the leadership of the National Health Students’ Association of Ghana (NAHSAG) sends the following fraternal message of congratulation to the graduates on their successful completion of their training.
“Undeniably, success is not final and failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts. (Winston Churchill).
You are all true epitomes of determination, hard work, and dedication. There were times your training became more challenging, there were times you had to relinquish various intriguing aspects of life, not forgetting the sleepless nights as well, all in the name of equipping yourselves to serve humanity.
It was never easy but for your determination and hard work this is how far the good Lord has brought you.
It has been proven again that, whenever the mind and heart are put together into purpose, with determination and hard work anything can be achieved. We will agree with Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine that “wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity”.
You have established beyond all evenhanded doubts that you are certainly ready and determined to serve humanity.
We beseech you all therefore to make this your focus in the quest to better the country’s Health system.
We finally applaud your various lecturers, practitioners, parents/guardians and the government for the various thorough efforts, investments and sacrifices made towards your training and the betterment of the Ghana health system, and we do encourage them all to keep up with the good works.”
NAHSAG is a national representative body of all health students and fresh graduates in and from the various Health training institutions and Universities across the length and breadth of Ghana.
